MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior guard Carmen Grande led all scorers with 16 points in the Cardinals 84-46 dominating win over Lipscomb Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State improves to 3-0 on the season while Lipscomb falls to 1-2. The 3-0 start for Ball State marks the first time since the 2006-07 season the Cardinals have accomplished that feat.
Grande, along with her 16 points, also dished out eight assists and registered six steals. Senior forward Moriah Monaco scored in double figures for the third straight game finishing the night with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Destiny Washington added 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks to the victory.
Ball State and Lipscomb played even at the start of the game. The score was 9-9 with 5:49 left in the first quarter. Ball State then put together an 11-0 run in the next three minutes of play to take a 20-9 lead over the Lady Bisons. The bench fueled the Cardinals during the scoring spree with baskets from junior guard Nakeya Penny, sophomore forward Aliyah Walker and help from veterans Grande and Monaco. Ball State kept the momentum going and took a 22-13 advantage over Lipscomb heading into the second stanza.
During the second period the Cardinals held Lipscomb to only 10 points. Ball State continued with its fast paced style of play allowing players to score in transition while attacking the rim. A coast to coast layup from Grande sealed the 41-23 advantage for Ball State at intermission over the Lady Bisons. Grande led all scorers at the half with 10 points.
A 9-0 run at the start of the third period helped Ball State extend its lead to 21 (50-29) at the 6:40 mark. Grande, Washington and junior guard Jasmin Samz chipped in for the Cardinals during the run along with some key assists and a few steals along the way. Ball State had built a 63-33 cushion by the end of the third quarter.
The 30-point deficit and Ball State's tight defense was too much for Lipscomb to overcome in the final period. For the game, the Cardinals won every statistical category over the Lady Bisons and the one that sticks out the most to sixth year head coach Brady Sallee is points in the paint. Tonight the Cardinals achieved that category, 34-to-10.
The dominating win also allowed many of the Cardinals' newcomers to see some playing time which was led by freshman guard Maliah Howard-Bass with nine points.
The Ball State women's basketball team plays at Vanderbilt Monday. The contest will be played in Memorial Gym at 1 p.m. (EST).
