NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Both senior forward Moriah Monaco and junior guard Carmen Grande posted an all-around performance to lead Ball State to an 88-79 win over SEC foe Vanderbilt Monday afternoon in Memorial Gym.
With the win, Ball State improves to 4-0 for the first time since 2006-07 while Vanderbilt falls to 0-4 this season. Sixth year head coach Brady Sallee has now beaten three schools in the Power 5 conference; Minnesota (54-51), Iowa (77-72) and Vanderbilt (88-79).
"Our team had an impressive look about them today," Sallee said. "They were ready for this game and it showed with the job we did on the boards. Jasmin got us going with the way she came out of the gates shooting the ball and then Mo and Carmen took over, but don't forget Osh's big night on the boards!!! It was just a ton of big time performances today."
Monaco finished with 26 points and went 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Grande had another strong showing, posting a double-double with 21 points and 13 assists, one shy of her career high. Junior guard Jasmin Samz and freshman forward Oshlynn Brown also got into double figures, totaling 16 points for a season high for Samz and 16 rebounds for Brown.
Monaco and Grande set the tone early for the Cardinals, along with some help from Samz and Frannie Frazier. The four scored a combined 17 points in the first quarter along with five assists from Grande. Ball State's locked down defense held the Commodores to only 26.7 percent on 4-of-15 shooting heading into the second stanza.
Vanderbilt began the second period with an 8-2 run to knot the game 19-19 at the 6:30 mark but Monaco knocked down a quick 3-point basket on the Cardinals ensuing possession. A forced turnover from the Cardinals defense allowed Grande to hit a fast break layup to put Ball State back up by five (24-19) with 5:38 left. The Commodores cut it back to three (25-22) before Grande quickly hit a 3-point basket, then a steal and a dish to Samz in transition, to give Ball State an eight-point advantage (30-22). The Cardinals out-rebounded the Commodores 25-to-13 at the half, helping Ball State to make it a 36-29 ball game at the break.
The Commodores opened the third quarter with a 13-7 run to cut the Cardinals seven-point halftime lead down to one (43-42) with 4:48 on the clock. It was Vanderbilt's Chelsie Hall that made the biggest difference during that six minute stretch, after rattling off nine points for the Commodores. After a tight affair, Ball State put together an 11-4 scoring spree with baskets from Aliyah Walker, Grande and Monaco to put the Cardinals back up by eight (55-47) with 47 seconds left in the frame. Ball State still led heading into the final quarter, 56-50.
The answer in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals was how well they executed the ball and free throws. Ball State thrived from the charity stripe to seal the game, making 14 free throws while shooting 70 percent. Another deciding factor was rebounds, as the Cardinals out-rebounded the Commodores 43-to-27 for the game.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues play on the road when it travels to Tennessee State Wednesday. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (EST) tipoff in the Gentry Center.
