Jack Cunningham ties for fourth to lead five Cardinals in top 30
POWELL'S POINT, N.C. -- The Ball State men's golf team matched the school record for lowest 54-hole score in relation to par on the way to a runner-up finish at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals closed the tournament Tuesday with a final-round score of 276 – the fourth-best 18-hole score in program history – counting four under-par scores.
The sterling round brought the Cardinals' three-day total to 835 (-17) at Kilmaric Golf Club. The 17-under-par score matched the performance of the 2000 squad at the Legends of Indiana Intercollegiate for the best mark in relation to par by a BSU team.
In a field of 18 teams, Ball State finished behind only tournament champion Campbell (-31). The Cardinals held a 13-shot advantage over third-place Old Dominion, the tournament host.
Jack Cunningham polished off the best week of his young freshman season with his third consecutive under-par round, a 70, to move into a tie for fourth place individually. He finished three shots back of Campbell's Ray Kraivixien (-9), the individual medalist. Cunningham's 6-under-par total of 207 matched the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
All five Ball State golfers finished among the top 30 in a field of 93 players.
Johnny Watts fired his second straight 68 Tuesday to move up into a tie for 14th. He matched teammate Michael Makris with a 54-hole total of 211 (-2) for the week.
VanDeventer tied Watts with a 68 for BSU's low round of the final day and climbed into a tie for 19th at 212 (-1). Timothy Wiseman rounded out the lineup in a tie for 27th at 215 (+2).
Ball State racked up 65 birdied over the three rounds to lead the field. Watts made 16 of them – the most of any player in the tournament – including seven in the final round alone. Cunningham and Makris each made 14 for the week.
The Cardinals now have one event left on their fall schedule. They will travel to Hawaii to compete Nov. 3-5 at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
