Cardinals Fall for the Second Straight Day to Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio –Toledo scored eight runs in the first inning on the way to a 10-7 win over the Ball State baseball team Saturday afternoon at Scott Park.
Toledo's (15-35-1, 10-10 MAC) Cory Finkler capped the eight run inning in the first with a three-run home run over the left field fence, and reached base three times during the contest. The home run was the first of his collegiate career, and his three RBIs was a career-high.
Ball State (29-22, 14-9) did not go down quietly. After cutting the lead to seven in fifth thanks to junior Caleb Stayton's RBI single, the Cardinals added four unearned runs in the sixth. A throwing error on a bunt extended the inning, and Ball State used two doubles and a single to cut the Toledo advantage to 10-7.
Ball State would get two runners on in the seventh and ninth innings, but could not push across any more runs. The Cardinals left 12 runners on base in the loss.
Junior Alex Maloney led the Cardinals at the plate thanks for going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored three times. Stayton chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.
Four Rockets tallied multiple RBIs as Toledo won its sixth consecutive MAC game.
Ball State will look to avoid the sweep in the series finale tomorrow, May 15 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
