Ball State Rally Comes Up Just Short in 10-7 Loss at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Host Toledo jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the Ball State baseball team and held on for a 10-7 victory Friday afternoon at Scott Park.
Toledo (14-35-1, 9-10 MAC) has now won five straight league games.
John Martillotta hit a three-run home run in the first and AJ Montoya added a two-run shot in the third to give the Rockets a 5-2 lead. In the fourth, Toledo managed to plate four more runs without a hit to extend its cushion to 9-2.
Ball State (29-21, 14-8) slowly crept back into the game thanks to home runs from sophomore Colin Brockhouse, redshirt freshman Griffin Hulecki and junior Alex Call.
Trailing 9-5 heading into the top of the eighth, the Cardinals notched two more runs on RBIs from juniors Matt Eppers and Alex Maloney. Call came to the plate with two outs and the tying run on base, but grounded out to shortstop.
Martillotta finished with four RBIs for Toledo while starting pitcher Steven Calhoun (4-8) earned the victory by throwing 7.0 innings and striking out seven batters.
For the third time this year and second time in the last four games, Call recorded two home runs in a game. The right fielder leads the team with 12 home runs.
The two teams continue the three-game series tomorrow, May 14 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
