
Women's Tennis Ends Weekend With A 5-2 Win Over WKU

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team closed out its weekend with a 5-2 victory over
Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cardinals improved their overall spring record to 4-2 while the Hilltoppers fall to 1-3 overall.
Ball State took an early 1-0 lead over Western Kentucky after earning doubles victories on courts three and two. Toni Ormond alongside teammate Julia Sbircea took the first match from Western Kentucky's Cassie Pennington and Violetta Shatalova by a score of 6-1 on court three. After that, Audrey Berger and Peyton Gollhofer clinched the doubles point for the Cardinals with their 6-3 victory over the Hilltopers Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou at the No. 2 spot.
In singles action, Western Kentucky quickly knotted the match at 1-1 after Cynthia Melita defeated Sbircea in straight sets on court five. Gollhofer then earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot to give Ball State back the 2-1 lead over the Hilltoppers.
The Cardinals then took a 3-1 advantage with Isabelle Dohanics 6-2, 6-3 victory over WKU's Beatriz Gutierrez. It was Carmen Blanco on the top court that would clinch the fourth and final point the Cardinals needed for the victory over the Hilltoppers. Blanco beat Hejlova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Ball State women's tennis remains at home when it hosts Chicago State Friday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
