
Women's Tennis Clinches Two Wins Friday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team clinched two wins in Friday's doubleheader at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals defeated Chicago State 7-0 in the afternoon match and then capped the day off with a 6-1 win over Evansville.
With the win, Ball State improved to 6-2 overall for the 2016 spring season. Chicago State dropped to 0-7 while Evansville falls to 1-5.
Ball State took the early 1-0 edge over Evansville after earning the doubles point over the Purple Aces. The Cardinals took all three doubles matches from Evansville. Bethany Moore and Isabelle Dohanics got Ball State on the right foot early after defeating Leah Helpingstine and Katie Delgado by a score of 6-0. Toni Ormond and Julia Sbircea clinched the doubles point over Doreen Crasta and Kennedy Craig with a 6-3 score. Audrey Berger and Peyton Gollhofer closed doubles play with a 6-4 victory.
In singles action, the Cardinals took five of the six singles matches from the Purple Aces. Gollhofer, Ormond, Berger, Sbircea and Moore all won on their respective courts in straight sets. Moore did not give up a game, beating Helpingstine 6-0, 6-0 on court six.
Ball State dominated the evening match against Chicago State, sweeping both doubles and singles competitions over the Cougars. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Blanco and Calderon dropped only one game in their 6-1 win over the Cougars' Hanna Pangestu and Marnie Perez-Ochoa. Moore paired up with Gollhofer at the No. 2 spot for a 6-3 victory over Chicago State's Monica Pulgar and Leshia Gadacz.
In singles, the Cardinals took down the Cougars in straight sets on courts one through five. BothOrmond and Sbircea defeated their opponents in their respective positions, 6-1, 6-1. Moore won her first set over Bryttish Burts 6-0 and then lost only a game in the second set. Blanco andDohanics also ended the competition with victories.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues non-conference play Sunday, Feb. 21 at Youngstown State with a 9 a.m. first serve in the Boardman Tennis Center.
