April 19, 2026 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team closed out their 2026 campaign on a high note Sunday, securing a 5-2 victory over MAC rival Miami (OH) at First Serve Muncie. With this final win, the Cardinals end the year with a 10-9 overall record and a 3-5 mark in conference play. Prior to the match the Cardinals paid tribute to their lone senior Asia Ting Fontana, who claimed match point today on court No. 3.
"I'm feeling a mix of emotions right now," Fontana said. "While I'm incredibly sad to be leaving this amazing team, I'm so happy to end my tennis career on such a high note. Winning both my singles and doubles matches on Senior Day is a rare feat in college tennis, and it truly means the world to me. I wish I could stay, but I know this team is going to do great things next year. They've got this."
You'd never have known it was the Cardinals' season finale based on their dominant double's performance against rival Miami. Fontana and Sydney Hrehor stepped up in the lineup and made quick work of Nina Marcela Chavez Vicente and Maria Komar, winning 6-0 to give Ball State an early spark. While the RedHawks took a hard-fought victory on the top court, the No. 3 duo of Alana Bristow and Gabriella Barrera mounted a gritty comeback. After trailing 4-5, they held serve to lead 6-5 and ultimately secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win.Â

Ball State carried its momentum into singles play, claiming four of the six opening sets against Miami. Priyanka Rana dominated on the top court with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Maria Luisa Oliveira, extending the Cardinals' lead to 2-0.Â
Â
While the Redhawks kept the score tight, Isabel Tanjuatco delivered a confident straight sets win on court No. 5 to bring Ball State within one point of the overall victory.Â
Â
The match ultimately rested on the shoulders of lone senior Asia Fontana; after trailing 5-1 in the second set, she mounted a spectacular comeback to force a tiebreaker. Fontana triumphed 7-6 (7-1) over Lovisa Valentinsson, clinching the match for BSU.
