LEADERBOARD

AKRON, Ohio -- Michael VanDeventer and Johnny Watts finished among the top 10 to lead the Ball State men's golf team at Akron's Firestone Invitational.

The Cardinals closed the tournament Tuesday with a round of 295 to finish in seventh place as a team. BSU posted a total of 866 (+2) over three rounds on the North Course at Firestone Country Club.

Cincinnati (-14) finished atop the leaderboard by three strokes over Illinois State (-11). Akron (-8) took third in the field of 16 teams. Cincinnati's Austin Squires was the individual medalist at 11 under par, finishing four shots clear of the field.

VanDeventer led Ball State with a 2-under par 70 on the final day. He was even par or better in all three rounds. The Cardinals also counted a pair of 74s from Watts and Keegan McKinney on Tuesday along with a 77 from Michael Makris.

VanDeventer jumped seven spots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for fifth with a career-best score of 211 (-5). The fifth-place result was the best of his collegiate career. He made 12 birdies for the week and led the field in par-5 scoring at 8 under (tying with Watts).

Watts, who recorded an eagle for the second day in a row, finished with a total of 212 (-4). He tied for eighth place for his sixth top-10 finish dating back to the start of last season.

Makris was the next Ball State player on the individual leaderboard, tying for 38th.

The Cardinals are now halfway through their schedule of six fall events. They will have a quick turnaround before returning to action Sunday at the Fighting Irish Golf Classic at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
