Field Hockey Defeated by Miami in Last Home Game

MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite holding a tough Miami squad scoreless in the first half, the Ball State field hockey team fell to Miami 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
The first half was evenly matched for the Cardinals (7-10, 2-3 MAC) and the Redhawks (10-7, 4-1 MAC) and both teams went into halftime scoreless. Miami took four shots in the first half while the Cardinals took three. Miami won the penalty corner battle with three to Ball State's one.
The Redhawks came out fired up in the second half and took control of the tempo of the game. Miami's Paula Portugal scored her 14th goal of the season in the 53rd minute of the game, the only score of the day.
Miami also took over the penalty corner battle in the second half, finishing the day with 13. Late in the second half, the Redhawks took seven straight penalty corners.
Sophomore Darbi Gullett led the team with three shots, two of those on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jordan Dues finished her last home game with four saves.
The five seniors were honored prior to the game in a special ceremony to celebrate the last home game of the season.
The Cardinals will travel to Central Michigan to play in their final regular season game on Friday, Oct. 28. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
