Baseball Evens Series with 4-2 Win at Kent State

Ball State's baseball team tallied a 4-2 win at Kent State Saturday in Kent, Ohio, to even the series at 1-1. The Cardinals will face the Golden Flashes in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
With the win, Ball State improved to 22-11 overall and 8-3 in the Mid-American Conference, while Kent State fell to 18-12 overall and 7-4 in league play.
After falling behind 1-0 Saturday at Kent State, the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game. Matt Eppers led off the inning with a walk before Ryan Spaulding singled to put runners on first and third. Alex Call singled through the left side of the infield to knock in Eppers and Spaulding. Elbert Devarie added a sacrifice fly to score Call and the Cardinals led 3-1.
Kent State added one run in the fifth to close the gap to 3-2, but Ball State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Call led off the inning with a single and stole second. Devarie was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second with one out. A groundout gave the Cardinals two outs and moved the runners to second and third. Call scored on a Golden Flashes wild pitch and led 4-2.
Trevor Henderson started the game on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched 5.1 innings to secure the win and improve to 2-1 on the season. He allowed only two runs on three hits, while striking out three. B.J. Butler came on in relief and threw the final 3.2 innings to record his sixth save of the season. Butler allowed only one hit and struck out two to silence the Kent State bats.
Call led the Cardinals with a 2-for-4 performance on the day with one run-batted-in and two runs scored.
