Baseball Suffers Loss to Indiana in Florida

Ball State's baseball team suffered a 16-1 loss to Indiana in the Cardinals' final game of its Spring Break Trip in Port Charlotte, Fla.
The Cardinals broke up a no-hitter by the Hoosiers' Jake Kelzer in the seventh inning, but IU had already built an 11-0 lead and added five more runs in the eighth to dominate the game.
Alex Call broke up the no-hitter with a high chopper over the third baseman's head and then added his second hit of the contest in the ninth inning. Call had two of the team's three hits on the day with Matt Eppers adding a 1-for-3 performance.
Ball State scored their lone run of the game in the ninth when Eppers opened the inning with a single. Sean Kennedy reached on an error and moved Eppers to third base. Jarrett James reached on a fielder's choice that scored Eppers for the Cardinals one run.
Scott Baker started on the mound for Ball State and lasted 3.2 innings. Baker suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Trevor Simon, Colin Brockhouse and Devin Wilburn completed the game for the Cardinals.
Indiana's Kelzer was credited with the pitching victory after throwing 7.0 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters.
The Cardinals completed the Port Charlotte, Fla., portion of their trip with a 2-2 record. Ball State defeated Maine Tuesday before suffering a loss to Northwestern, beating Dartmouth and losing to Indiana.
Ball State returns to action Tuesday with its home opener vs. Miami University at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game. It will mark the Cardinals first game on its new Field Turf field. Admission to the game is free of charge at Ball Diamond in the First Merchants Bank Ballpark Complex.
