March 08, 2015 | Baseball
Ball State's baseball team improved to 7-6 on the season with a 7-4 victory over Dartmouth in Port Charlotte, Fla., Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals will end their Spring Break Trip with a 10 a.m. game vs. Indiana in Port Charlotte Sunday.
After scoring two runs in their first at-bat, the Cardinals fell behind 3-2 after two, but responded with two more runs in the third and never trailed from that point forward.
The first inning scoring came on an Elbert Devarie single that scored Alex Call, who had singled in the inning, and a Scott Tyler single that in turn scored Devarie.
In the third inning, Ball State's Jarett Rindfleisch doubled to right and after Tyler walked to put two runners on base, Brandon Estep doubled down the left field line and the Cardinals led 4-3.
The Cardinals added one run in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead after five frames.
In the fourth, Alex Maloney singled to center field and eventually scored on a Dartmouth error, while Tyler continued his hot day at the plate and singled to start the fifth inning. An Estep double down the left field line scored Tyler and Ball State's lead was increased to three runs.
Ball State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth and allowed the Big Green only one additional run in the seventh frame to claim the victory.
Brendan Burns started the game on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only three earned runs – all in the second inning – while striking out four and walking only two. David Current came on in relief and pitched two innings, allowing only one hit and one run, while striking out one.
Burns would earn the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season, while Trevor Henderson threw the final two innings, allowing no hits to earn his first save.
The Cardinals amassed 15 hits – the second highest single-game total this season – and had four doubles against Dartmouth.
Maloney, Call, Rindfleisch, Devarie and Tyler batted 2-6 in the order and each tallied two hits on the day. Estep added two hits and a team-high three RBI, while Colin Brockhouse made his first plate appearances in a Ball State uniform and was 2-for-5 on the day.
