Soccer Suffers 3-0 Setback to Toledo
October 05, 2014 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 setback to Toledo at the Briner Sports Complex.
Ball State surrendered an own goal in sixth minute, and Toledo led the rest of the way in a physical Mid-American Conference contest. The Cardinals dropped to 6-3-2 (2-2 MAC), while the Rockets improved to 4-7-1 (1-3 MAC).
“It was a very physical game, and I think we were physically outmatched,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I think it was a very imposing part of the game that we didn't match up with. It's something we have to take a look at for the future for when we play strong, physical teams. I didn't feel we were outplayed skill-wise in the run of play, but we were definitely dominated physically.”
Kiersten Johnson scored in the 29th minute to extend the Toledo advantage to 2-0. The first two scores for the Rockets came from the same part of the field on crosses from Hannah Scafaria. The first one deflected off the hands of Ball State goalkeeper Brooke Dennis and went in off a Cardinal defender, while Johnson was there to knock in the second one.
Scafaria added a goal of her own in the second half on a loose ball in front of the net to give Toledo the final 3-0 margin.
Ball State out-shot Toledo for much of the afternoon, though the shot count was 14 for both teams by the end of the game. A strong wind out of the West was a factor just as it was in the Cardinals' win over Central Michigan two days earlier.
Ball State had a couple of good scoring opportunities, most notably a shot by Madison Oyer from 25 yards out that hit the post, but Toledo kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Jenna Finke led Ball State with four shots, while Elaina Musleh recorded a pair on goal.
The Cardinals split time in the net with Dennis playing the opening half and freshman Alyssa Heintschel playing the second. Sam Tiongson played the full 90 minutes in goal for Toledo and made five saves on her way to the shutout.
Ball State was shut out for just the second time all season and the first time since Aug. 29 at Purdue. It was the first time the Cardinals had been shut out at home in a full calendar year, dating back to an Oct. 4, 2013 loss to Kent State.
“We are very disappointed with the result, but it's something we can address,” Roberts said. “We'll move forward from it and work on turning some areas of weakness into strengths.”
Despite the loss, Ball State remains in the thick of the MAC race after two weekends of league play. The Cardinals will head back on the road next weekend, visiting Ohio at 4 p.m. Friday and Kent State at 1 p.m. Sunday. The team's next home game is Oct. 17 against Western Michigan in a game that has been moved to 3:30 p.m.
