
XC's Courtney Edon Wins Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - In her final collegiate home meet, senior cross country runner Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) captured the 2014 Ball State Invitational title Thursday afternoon at the Muncie Elks Country Club.
Edon finished the 5K course in 18:31.1 to win the event by 13.7 seconds over Miami's Mattie Moncayo (18:44.8). The RedHawks captured the team title, with 20 points, as its five scored runners placed second through sixth. The Cardinals finished second in the meet with 41 points.
“I am really happy with the support we received from the Elks Country Club, race officials and the Ball State University community,” Ball State head coach Randy Heisler said. “I am also excited for Courtney, who was able to win her final home cross country meet with a pretty good time after running basically by herself over the final four kilometers. As a team, we will keep training and looking forward to the conference meet in a couple of weeks. ”
For the fifth consecutive meet, senior Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) finished behind her twin sister in Ball State's running order, crossing the finish line in seventh place at 19:10.0. Freshman Sarah Hoppes (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) was the Cardinals' third-best runner on the day, placing 11th overall in 19:43.3.
Rounding out Ball State's scored runners were junior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and sophomore Emma Manchess (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights/IPFW), who placed 12th (19:46.0) and 16th (20:03.4), respectively.
Also competing for the Cardinals were freshmen Jessica Bryzek (Brownsburg, Ind./Indiana Academy) in 17th (20:42.4) and Rachel Billingsley (Batesville, Ind./Oldenburg Academy) in 19th (21:07.2).
The Ball State Invitational served as the Cardinals' final tune-up before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship which will be run Nov. 1 at the Riverwood Resort Golf Course in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Central Michigan hosts the women's 6K championship race which is slated to start at 11 a.m.
