October 14, 2012 | Field Hockey
MUNICE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (3-12, 0-4 MAC) fell to Appalachian State 2-0 at the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex in gusty conditions Sunday afternoon.
"We didn't capitalize on the chances that we had today," said head coach Beth Maddox. "The defense didn't do its job."
Appalachian State had nine shots in the first, with Maddi Elliott (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) making three saves and Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) notching a defensive save as time expired in the first half to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the 46th minute off a goal by Hanna French and then scored in the 63rd minute from Dana Wetmore.
The Cardinals had five penalty corner opportunities to the Mountaineers' four and held the advantage in saves, 6-3.
Ball State will have another split weekend, hosting conference foe Miami at noon on Saturday, Oct. 20 before traveling to take on No. 11 Iowa on Sunday.
