Field Hockey Versus Indiana Saturday in Bloomington

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State field hockey travels to Indiana with a contest versus the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind., Noon Saturday at the IU Field Hockey Field.
FROM THE WEEKEND: Ball State traveled to Hamilton, N.Y. for a series of games with Colgate and Rider. Against the Raiders, senior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) finished with four saves in the cage while senior defender Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) recorded a defensive save, however Colgate defeated Ball State, 3-0, at Tyler's Field.
Also on the weekend, freshmen Sanne Hermans (The Hague, Holland) and Charlie Digby (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) scored their first career goals, but the Cardinals fell to the Broncs, 9-3. Senior forward Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) finished with one goal and 11 shots on the day, while Hermans tallied two. Mitchell and freshman Haley Fusting (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) split 70 minutes of action in the cage after combining for eight saves.
SCOUTING BALL STATE: Ball State enters weekend play with a 0-2 record on the year after opening the season with losses to Colgate and Rider. The Cardinals are averaging 17.5 shots per game, with Kuhn leading the squad with 19, while Mitchell has spent 105:00 in goal, including tallying nine saves.
SCOUTING INDIANA: Indiana enters the 2011 season with 30 votes in the 2011 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll, under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Amy Robertson, after finishing the 2010 season with a 9-9 record (1-5 Big 10). IU heads into weekend play after posting a 3-2 overtime win Sunday versus Duke. Morgan Fleetwood, Katie Griswold and Brenna Moeljadi stand as the Hoosiers' top returners, who have been named among Big Ten Players to Watch for the 2011 season. Fleetwood leads Indiana after connecting on 4-of-7 shots on goal, including two game-winners, in the young season.
SERIES HISTORY: Saturday's contest stands as the 20th all-time meeting between Ball State and Indiana, as the Hoosiers' own the 15-4 series advantage. The teams last met during the 2010 season at the BSU Turf Field when Ball State defeated Indiana, 2-1, in double-overtime. Senior Ellen Vonderbrink scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner at 88:50 mark, her first on the season.
COACHES IN THE CROWD: Beth Maddox enters her second season as head coach of the Ball State University field hockey team in 2011 with assistant coach Jacque DeMarco and student coaches Morgan Cloutier and Brittany Hammer. Maddox is the sixth head coach in Ball State history. Under her direction, the Cardinals have brought in 10 freshmen for the 2011 season, in addition to nine current upperclassmen. Ball State's international flair to the 2011 roster features Hermans from The Hague, Holland.
RETURNING PLAYERS: The Cardinals return seven seniors in an experienced upperclassmen group, including forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen), forward CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), Kuhn, Lulow, midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy), Mitchell and defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), while defender Devon Bell (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and midfielder Marisa Weachter (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) make up the two-member junior class.
NEWCOMERS: The squad welcomes ten freshmen to the 2011 roster in Digby, Fusting, midfielder Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. (Lakeland), Hermans, defender Laura Malinoski (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional), defender Jenna Rosenberry (Manheim, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), midfielder Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), forward Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis), midfielder Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) and midfielder Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia).
2010 MAC HONORS: Kuhn and Lulow earned First Team and Second Team All-MAC honors, respectively, in addition to Academic All-MAC honors. Also, Hermes, Lulow, Maguire and recent graduates Hannah Jones, Kaitlan Mitchell and Maura Sawicki earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad honors.
COMING UP ON THE CARDINALS' CALENDAR: Maddox and the team opens the home portion of the 2011 season Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the BSU Turf Field against Northwestern at 3 p.m. The contest marks the 25th time Ball State and Northwestern will met as the Wildcats own the 15-7-2 all-time record against the Cardinals. Ball State has tallied an all-time record of 47-59 (.443) at BSU Turf Field in Muncie, Ind. since the facility opened Sept. 12, 1998.
