Field Hockey Adds Two to 2011 Roster

MUNCIE, Ind. - Two additional student-athletes signed national letters of intent to join the Ball State field hockey program for the 2011 season.
Sanne Hermans and Laura Malinoski will be joining Courtney Abbott (Cape Town, South Africa/Rustenburg), Charlie Digby (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), Haley Fusting (Louisville, Kent./Sacred Heart), Leanne Goldblatt (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland), Jenna Rosenberry (Manheim, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), Tarel Teach (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), Kaitlin Thompson (San Carlos, Calif./St. Francis), Bianca Velez (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) and Tori Widrick (Cazenovia, N.Y./Casenovia) and the returning Cardinals next season.
“We are thrilled to add Sanne Hermans and Laura Malinoski to our 2011 team,” head coach Beth Maddox said. “With the 11 amazing student athletes coming for the 2011 season, Jacque and I could not be more excited.”
Hermans played tennis for six years, gymnastics for two years and cricket for three years, in addition to starting field hockey at the age of six. Born Jan 21, 1993 and hailing from Holland, Hermans played with the field hockey club team Klein Zwitserland in the Hague in the top teams D3, D1, C3, C1, B3, B1 and A3 since she was eight, and this year in A1.
Coached by Erik van der Pol, Hermans plays usually as a defender or midfielder. She has also trained with Marjolein Bakker, who has played on the national team of the Netherlands, Steven Brasem, who plays on the first men's team of Klein Zwitserland, Simon Organ, who also played in the first men's team of Klein Zwitserland and went on to coach, and Max Galgas, the coach of the first men's team of HC Bloemendaal, the national champions of the Netherlands.
Hermans has also obtained her referee's certificate, an obligation for field hockey players in Holland. Off the field, she participated on the school student board, the yearbook committee, the lustrum committee of the VCL - an organization of the lustrum week, the alumni day and raising money for a fundraiser for children, a counselor at the Moezelkamp summer camp in Germany and participated in the youth board of her field hockey club.
“Sanne will bring creativity to our team, Maddox said. “She is an excellent distributor, is very athletic and her vision is fantastic.”
Coached by Jean Marie Seal and Julie Thornton at Rancocas Valley Regional High School, Malinoski is a three-year letterwinner as a defender. She helped her team earn 2010 Liberty Division and 2008 Central Jersey Group IV accolades. During her senior season, Malinoski earned First-Team All-South Jersey, First-Team All-Burlington County and First-Team All-Liberty Division accolades. As a junior, she earned Second-Team All-Burlington County and First-Team All-Liberty Division honors, in addition to collecting First-Team All-Liberty Division and team Rookie of the Year accolades as a sophomore. Malinoski was named varsity captain during her final two seasons and stood as the most valuable player as a senior.
She also played for the Surf & Sand club team as a defender under the direction of Maggie Long and played softball for four years at first base, helping her team earn four-consecutive Liberty Division honors, in addition to collecting First-Team All-South Jersey, First-Team All-Liberty Division and First-Team All-Burlington County individual accolades.
Also at Rancocas Valley Regional, Malinoski participated in the National Honors Society and the National Italian Honors Society. The daughter of Gary Malinoski, who played baseball at Rutgers, and Terri Malinoski, she has two brothers, Scott (20) and Kurt (13). Born April 10, 1993 in Sommerset, N.J., Malinoski intends to major in secondary education.
“Laura is extremely athletic and has a killer reach,” Maddox said. “She is a smart player and will undoubtedly take our team to the next level. She is eager to learn and will definitely add to our program.”
