Field Hockey Falls to Appalachian State in Overtime
August 28, 2010 | Field Hockey
The transfer from Frostburg State opened up play for the Cardinals with an unassisted goal at 0:42, but the Mountaineers soon evened the score with a shot from Lesley Thomas at 2:41.
The early tie held until the second period at 38:33, when junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) slid her second shot past goalkeeper Bridgette Street after sending her first attempt wide of the cage.
Appalachian State would score again to tie the game at 2-2, only to have Mixell etch a third mark on the scoreboard for Ball State at 59:54, and push the Cardinals up by one. However, just before the end of the second period, Appalachian State's Lisa Charney netted the equalizer past sophomore netminder Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) and Emily Knapp secured the gamewinner after 4:36 of overtime.
Mixell, Kuhn and senior forward Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) tallied two shots apiece during the game, while senior defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), senior forward/midfielder Kaitlan Mitchell (Lancaster, Pa./Cocalico) and senior forward Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) each added one.
The Mountaineers outshot the Cardinals, 14-10. Hammer finished the contest with six saves in 74:36 minutes and the Mountaineers' Street accumulated three.
Ball State opens the home portion of the 2010 season Friday, Sept. 3 at the BSU Turf Field against Robert Morris at 3 p.m.
