Field Hockey Shutout Colonials in Home Opener

Muncie, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team scored five goals en route to a 5-0 shutout victory against Robert Morris Friday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
Head coach Beth Maddox picked up her first career home victory as the Cardinals (2-1) outshot the visiting Colonials (0-2), 20-4. Ball State also connected on five of its 13 shots on goal.
Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and Brandi Mixell (Fort Littleton, Pa./Frostburg) each recorded two goals, in addition to junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow's (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tally at 37:52, to complete the scoring for the contest.
At 17:03, Kuhn released from the pack on a breakaway goal toward the Colonials' goaltender Stephanie Seeley. Entering the second period, Mixell posted an unassisted goal, quickly followed by Lulow's shot less than two minutes later. Kuhn tallied her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, at 48:56 mark. Mixell posted the final goal of the game, and her fourth of the season, at 63:39 mark. Kuhn and Lulow provided the double assist off of a penalty corner.
Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and sophomore netminder Morgan Hammer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) split time in the cage. Hammer made three saves in 35 minutes of action, while Seeley finished with eight.
Coming up on the Cardinals' calendar, the squad travels to play Northwestern and Iowa in a two-game series in the Big 10 Conference, starting Friday, Sept. 17 in Evanston, Ill. at 3 p.m. Friday's game marks the 24th time Ball State and Northwestern have met. The Wildcats own a 14-7-2 all-time record against the Cardinals. The teams last met Sept. 3, 2007 when Northwestern defeated Ball State, 5-2.
The contest versus Iowa Saturday, Sept. 18 marks the 21st meeting between the two teams, as the Hawkeyes own an 18-2 series advantage against the Cardinals. Northwestern finished the 2009 season with a 12-8 record (1-5 Big 10), while Iowa went 9-10 (3-3 Big 10).
