Men's S&D Places Second In Doug Coers Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Led by three second-day event wins by Gavin McNeeley, the Ball State men's swimming & diving team finished the 2010 Doug Coers Invitational with 639 points to place second among the four teams at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
Grand Valley State won the meet with an overall score of 817, while Valparaiso (246) took third and Findlay (5) finished fourth. Overall, the Cardinals won five of the 14 events on the final day of competition.
The Cardinals opened the second day of the meet with Michael Weber, McNeeley, Chris Krupa and Casey Schroeder posting a .10 of-a-second victory in the 200 medley relay, combining for a time of 1:36.44.
Four events later, McNeeley collected BSU's first individual event win, and his second overall win of the afternoon, with a first-place clocking of 59.78 in the 100 breaststroke.
Ball State's second individual event win came during the diving break, with Jeremy Whited turning in a one-meter score of 283.30, just shy of the NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying mark of 290.
Two events later, McNeeley collected his third event win, posting a final wall touch of 2:11.73 to win the 200 breaststroke.
Krupa added a pair of second-place individual efforts, with a times of 51.22 in the 100 butterfly and 1:55.87 in the 200 butterfly.
Weber also added a pair of second-place showings in the 100 backstroke (52.84) and 200 backstroke (1:52.64).
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action Dec. 3-4, when it heads back to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational which begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
DAY 1 RESULTS
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Behind first-place finishes in five events, the Ball State men's swimming & diving team finds itself in second place after the opening day of the 2010 Doug Coers Invitational.
Grand Valley State leads the four-team meet with 215 points, followed by Ball State (202), Valparaiso (78) and Findlay (0).
The Cardinals opened the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Michael Weber, Tony DeBrota, Chris Krupa and Casey Schroeder collected a time of 1:26.95 to win the event by almost a second-and-a-half.
Grand Valley State followed with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 500 freestyle relay, which helped them capture the overall edge in the meet. Nicholas Stevens was BSU's top performer in the event, placing fifth with a time of 4:54.15.
Krupa recaptured the podium for the Cardinals in the 200 IM, turning in a winning effort of 1:56.29, while Schroeder gave BSU back-to-back event wins with a time of 21.77 in the 50 freestyle.
Jeremy Whited made it three-straight event wins for the Cardinals, taking top billing on the three-meter diving board with a score of 248.65.
The Cardinals rounded out the opening day of the meet with Weber, Gavin McNeeley, Krupa and Schroeder winning the 400 medley relay with a final wall touch of 3:28.16.
Action in the seventh-annual Doug Coers Invitational continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team competes in its final home meet of the 2010-11 season this weekend, when it hosts the seventh annual Doug Coers Invitational at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The two-day event, which runs Friday and Saturday, features the Cardinals, Grand Valley State, Findlay and Valparaiso.
The meet will also serve as senior day for the men's swimming & diving team, as it honors Chris Behrle, Mark Golden, Ryan Gordyan, Jeremy Whited and Josh Young.
The event is named after the late Doug Coers (1967-1997), who was a four-year member of the Ball State men's swimming and diving program from 1986-1989. From 1992-1993, Coers was a coach for the Catalina Swim Club, the Cardinal Swim Club, the Muncie Central High School Girls' Swim Team and assistant coach of the BSU women's swimming and diving program. The following four years, Coers coached the Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta, Ga.
For the past eight seasons, the Ball State men's swimming & diving program has awarded the Douglas A. Coers Memorial Scholarship: Loving, kind, sincere and true in his heart. Dedicated with a passion for swimming and his alma mater. Those attributes represent the spirit and memory of Doug Coers.
Previous award winners include: Mark Golden (2009-10), Austin Laska (2008-09), Kyle Hembree (2007-08), Ryan Franklin (2006-07), Adam Konopka (2005-06), Ritchie Caudill (2004-05), Ryan Bowman (2003-04), Rod Smith (2002-03), Matt Pavlovich (2001-02).
The 2010 Doug Coers Invitational gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. with the 200 freestyle relay and is followed in succession by the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving (women), 3-meter diving (men) and the 400 medley relay.
Saturday's competition is divided into three sessions with the first beginning at 9 a.m. The order of events for Saturday's first session include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 800 freestyle relay.
The second session of the day, beginning at 1 p.m., is highlighted by the women's 3-meter diving and the men's 1-meter diving events. The meet concludes with the 3 p.m. session, featuring the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.
