Cross Country Takes Top Eight Slots In BSU Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - In its first home meet since the 1996 Mid-American Conference Championships, the Ball State cross country team claimed the top eight spots in Monday's 5K Ball State Invitational, which was a non-scored exhibition contest with Indianapolis at the Muncie Elk's Country Club.
Junior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) made the most of her first career home appearance, and her first race since a 52nd-place showing in the 2007 NCAA Championships, by posting a first-place time of 17:30. Bishel finished over a minute-and-a-half faster than second-place runner and teammate senior Lisa Arrowsmith (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) who ran the course in 19:05.
BSU's three-sport star senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) took home third with a time of 19:21, while freshman newcomers Allison Blanck (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) and MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) placed fourth (19:31) and fifth (19:46), respectively.
Round out BSU's runners were: sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) in sixth-place (19:54), freshman Andrea Korzan (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn H.S.) in seventh-place (20.09), freshman Emily Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch H.S.) in eighth-place (20:25), junior Megan Burkett (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont H.S.) in 11th-place (21:45) and sophomore Kayla Eiler (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon H.S.) in 15th-place (22:55).
Katherine Wilhzin paced the Indianapolis roster with a ninth-place time of 21:00, while UI's Christy Nurkowski rounded out the top 10 (21:45).
The Ball State cross country team returns to action Sept. 12 when it competes in the Indiana Open in Bloomington, Ind.
