Cross Country Takes Sixth At Indiana Intercollegiates

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - Behind a first-place showing from redshirt junior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), the Ball State cross country team took home sixth place among the 22 teams in Friday's Indiana Intercollegiates Women's Big State 5K race hosted by Indiana State.
Bishel crossed the finish line in 17:28, four seconds ahead of Indiana's Wendi Robinson who took home second place to help the Hoosiers win the meet. Indiana finished with 47 points, followed by Purdue (52), Butler (102), Indiana State (104), DePauw (160) and Ball State (168).
BSU's three-sport athlete senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) was BSU's second-best runner, clocking a time of 19:07 to take 25th overall in the race.
The rest of the Cardinals' top five were: sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) in 41st with a time of 19:43, senior Lisa Arrowsmith (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) in 50th with a time of 19:55 and freshman Allison Blanck (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) in 51st with a time of 19:57.
Also running in the race, but not scoring for the Cardinals were freshmen MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.), Andrea Korzan (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn H.S.) and Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch H.S.) with times of 20:11, 20:44 and 21:15, respectively.
Ball State also had three runners in the women's open race, with junior Megan Burkett (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont H.S.) leading the trio and placing 28th overall with a time of 21.54. Sophomores Brandi Robinson (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park H.S.) and Kayla Eiler (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon H.S.) rounded BSU competitors with times of 23:54 (61st) and 24:16 (65th).
The Ball State women's cross country team returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26 when it travels to Athens, Ohio for the Ohio University Invitational.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's cross country team returns to action Friday, Sept. 18, when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Indiana State. The event gets underway at 3:30 p.m. with the open race, followed by the women's 5K and the men's 8K.
Including Ball State, there are 24 teams slated to participate in the women's 5K. Joining the Cardinals are Anderson, Butler, DePauw, Earlham, Evansville, Franklin, Grace, Hanover, Huntington, Indiana, Indiana East, Indiana State, Indiana Wesleyan, Indianapolis, IPFW, IUPUI, Manchester, Oakland City, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, SMWC, Taylor, Vincennes.
Once on the course, the Cardinals will be led by senior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) who redshirted during the 2008 cross country season. Bishel, a 2007 First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection, led BSU at the non-scored 5K BSU Invitational earlier this season with a time of 17:30. Bishel's mark was the meet's best time by over a minute-and-a-half and trumped her 2007 season-best effort of 17:38.9 by over eight seconds.
Seniors Lisa Arrowsmith (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) and Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), who shared the spotlight as BSU's second-best runner in three meets each in 2008, finished second (19:05) and third (19:21), respectively, at the BSU Invitational.
Freshmen Allison Blanck (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) and MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) rounded out the top five in their first action as Cardinals with fourth (19:31) and fifth-place (19:46) finishes.
Rounding out Ball State's top eight performers at the BSU Invitational were sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) who placed sixth (19:54), followed by freshmen Andrea Korzan (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn H.S.) and Emily Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch H.S.) who came in seventh (20:09) and eighth (20:25), respectively.
