
Swimming & Diving Wraps Up Doug Coers Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - - With 861 points, the Ball State women's swimming & diving team took home top honors in the 2009 Doug Coers Invitational which took place this Friday and Saturday at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The men's team finished the two-day event with 675 points to finish second.
On the women's side, the Cardinals secured 12 second-day event victories to add to their five from the first day for a total of 17. The women finished the meet 185 points ahead of second-place Grand Valley State (676), while Findlay rounded out the three-team field with 240 points.
For the men, the Cardinals posted one second-day event victory to add to their three from the first day for a total of four. Grand Valley State was the men's meet winner with 910 points, followed by BSU (675) and Findlay (128).
The women's team opened the second day of competition with a first-place showing in the 200 medley relay, as Nikki Saulters, Emily Karwoski, Maria Gramelspacher and Katie Bylsma combined for a time of 1:49.67. The men's 200 medley relay squad of Tyler Dixon, Gavin McNeeley, Chris Krupa and Austin Laska clocked in with a second-place time of 1:38.36.
Mary Ehresman picked up the women's squad's second event win of the day, posting a season-fast time of 4:38.64 in the 400 IM, while Mackenzie Imbro placed second with an effort of 4:42.68. Andrew Hostetler led the men's squad with a third-place time of 4:22.92 in the event.
BSU's women's squad added another 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly, as Maria Gramelspacher won the event with a time of 58.23, while Sara Hostetler swam the event in 58.53 to take second. Chris Krupa was the men's top performer in the 100 butterfly, placing third with a 52.78 clocking.
Elizabeth Spilman and Bylsma gave the women's squad this third-straight 1-2 showing with time of 1:55.86 and 1:57.93, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Mark Golden added a third-place showing of 1:48.91 to pace the men's team.
E. Karwoski picked up the women's fifth-straight event victory in the 100 breaststroke, finishing the event with a time of 1:07.60, over a second faster than the second-place swimmer from GVSU. McNeeley led the men with a third-place swim of 1:00.40.
Saulters' time of 59.85, the only sub-minute performer for the women, gave BSU its sixth-straight win and finishing almost a second-and-a-half faster than the second-place swimmer. Adam Dale turned in the men's top effort, placing third with a time of 55.17.
The women's squad capped off the morning session with Joan Cullen, Sarah Kehe, Bylsma and Spilman taking top billing in the 800 freestyle with a time of 7:55.46. On the men's side, Ben Karwoski, Dale, Nicholas Stevens and A. Hostetler turned in a time of 7:18.89 to take home second.
The afternoon session started Christina Riordan and Lisa Maertin logging a 1-2 finished on the 3-meter diving board with scores of 268.1 and 264.4, respectively. Quinton Rodriguez was the men's top performer on the 1-meter event with a fourth-place score of 222.65.
In the longest event of the meet, Spilman posted a time of 18:03.30 to place second in the 1650 freestyle, while B. Karwoski was the men's top finisher, placing third with a time of 16:85.43.
In the 200 backstroke, S. Hostetler turned in a time of 2:08.04 to place first, while Emily Richards timed out at 2:12.86 to place third. On the men's side, Dixon finished third with a clocking of 2:00.34
Bylsma added another win for the BSU women's squad in the 100 freestyle, turning in a time of 53.61, while Jillian Bischoff placed third (55.06). Deven Hill and Laska added a 2-3 finish for the men, with times of 48.14 and 48.28, respectively.
In the 200 breaststroke, E. Karwoski led the women with a second-place effort of 2:28.19, while McNeeley added a fourth-place (2:15.78).
The final individual event saw the women sweep the top three spots, with Gramelspacher (2:07.87), S. Hostetler (2:12.14) and Ehresman (2:13.46) finishing in the top three. Krupa added a third-place time of 1:59.57 for the men.
In the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, both the men and the women scored wins, with Cullen, Bischoff, Saulters and Bylsma posting a 3:37.88 for the women and Ben Battjes, Casey Schroeder, Hill and Laska clocking in at 3:10.82.
Both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action Dec. 4, when Eastern Illinois visits the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The meet, which starts at 6 p.m., will be webcasted live by Ball State Sports Link and can be seen free of charge on ballstatesports.com.
Opening Day Results
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After the first day of action at the 2009 Doug Coers Invitational, the Ball State women's swimming & diving team finds itself in first place with 258 points, while the men's team is in second with a score of 200 points.
On the women's side, the hosts Cardinals hold a 51-point advantage over second-place Grand Valley State (207), while Findlay (71) is in third.
For the men, Grand Valley State (250) holds a 50-point lead over the Cardinals (200), while Findlay (52) is in third.
In the first event of the meet, the Cardinals swept the 200 Freestyle Relay with the women's team of Joan Cullen, Nicole Saulters, Jillian Bischoff and Katie Bylsma turning in a time of 1:38.92. For the men, Ben Battjes, Chris Krupa, Devon Hill and Austin Laska turned in a clocking of 1:25.88.
In the next event, Elizabeth Spilman took home top billing in the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.57, while Mary Ehresman place third at 5:14.12. Ben Karwoski was the men's top finisher in 500 freestyle, placing second with a time of 4:47.33.
The women's squad followed with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM, as Emily Karwoski posted a time of 2:10.17 and was followed by Mackenzie Imbro (2:13.80) and Maria Gramelspacher (2:14.64). Chris Krupa was the men's top scorer in the event, posting a third-place effort of 2:00.21.
In the 50 freestyle, Battjes and Laska provided a 1-2 punch for the men's squad, logging times of 21.49 and 21.54, respectively. Bylsma was the top women's performer in the event, taking home second with a time of 24.62.
In the final individual event of the day, women's divers Lisa Maertin (280.65) and Christina Riordan (271.90) swept the top two spots on the 1-meter board, while Jeremy Whited (254.40) took first in the 3-meter event for the men. Both Maertin and Riordan's scores were NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks.
In the final event of the day, the women's 400 medley relay team of Saulters, Karwoski, Sara Hostetler and Bylsma placed first with a time of 3:56.96.
Action in the 2009 Doug Coers Invitational continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
