Cross Country Places Third At Legends 5K Run

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - With two runners placing in the top 10, the Ball State cross country team opened the 2008 season with a third-place showing at the Great American Legends 5K Run hosted by Purdue.
The Boilermakers took home the team title, as well as the first two individual spots, with their five runners combining to score 24 points. Northwestern finished second with 49 points, followed by Ball State (56), Ohio State (103) and Butler (135). Central Michigan, Miami and Taylor also sent runners to the event, but did not field a complete team.
Senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) paced the Cardinals' clocking in with a sixth-place time of 19:13.37. Also finishing in the top 10 for BSU in the 66-runner field was junior Lisa Arrowsmith (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) with an eighth-place time of 19:19.17.
Juniors Kelsey Nielsen (Bremen, Ind./Bremen H.S.), Brittany Ade (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger H.S.) and Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) rounded out BSU's top five runners, finishing 11th (19:27.70), 13th (19:27.95) and 18th (19:37.70), respectively.
Also running for the Cardinals were sophomores Erin Filak (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic H.S.) and Amanda Hon (Florence, Ind./Switzerland H.S.), with times of 21:19.85 and 22:01.29, respectively.
The Ball State cross country team returns to action Sept. 19, when it travels to Bloomington for the Indiana Intercollegiate.
