Cross Country Opens Indiana Weekend With Strong Showing

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Behind a 10th-place finish from senior Vanessa Gilbert (18:44), the Ball State cross country team took home third-place honors at the 2008 Indiana Intercollegiates Women's 5K run hosted by Indiana Friday afternoon.
The BSU cross country squad was the first of four BSU teams to face the Hoosiers this weekend, as women's volleyball, field hockey and football also battle IU.
In a field that features 21 teams and 159 runners, the Cardinals placed all five scoring runners inside the top 31, including Gilbert's 10th-place effort and a 15th-place showing from Lisa Arrowsmith (19:07).
Purdue captured the overall title with 45 points, while Indiana (57), Ball State (106), Indiana State (109) and Southern Indiana (129) rounded out the top five teams.
Indiana Tech, which placed ninth overall, had the top individual runners, as Alissa McKaig clocked in at 17:47 to win the event's 27th individual title.
Rounding out Ball State's scorers were Sarah Kehe (22nd; 19:17), Brittany Ade (28th; 19:30) and Kelsey Nielsen (31st; 19:36). Erin Filak also ran for the Cardinals, finishing the 5K course in 21:34.
The Ball State cross country team returns to action Oct. 3, when it travels to South Bend for the Notre Dame Invitational.
