
Stovall Scores 14; Cardinals Fall At Purdue

Despite 14 points, six rebounds and four assists from Stovall -- as well as a strong fight from the undersized Cardinals -- the Boilermakers, in front of a home crowd of 13,212, proved to be too much, prevailing 70-57.

The Cardinals, who outworked and out hustled the Boilers for parts of the game, could not match it with consistency for a full 40 minutes.

After Laron Frazier's put-back tied the game at 17 in the first half, Purdue used a 15-2 run to take a 32-19 lead and held Ball State without a field goal for almost eight minutes. Ignited by seven points from Stovall, the Cardinals responded with a 12-4 run of their own to pull within 36-31 at halftime.
Stovall started the second half with a four-point play as the Cardinals appeared poised to earn their first victory of the season.
Ball State took its first lead of the game with 17:28 remaining in the second half on a Brandon Lampley three-pointer at 40-39, while a Melvin Goins' layup less than a minute later gave the Cardinals their final lead at 44-42.
However, the Boilermakers scored eight straight points and never looked back, as the Cardinals only managed 13 more points in the final 16 minutes of the game.
“We make runs, but then we lose focus,” Stovall said. “We have to learn to execute our offense and play tough defense for 40 minutes. We're getting closer and the guys keep working hard.”
Goins finished with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Freshman Malik Perry was the only other Cardinal in double figures with 13 points, on 50 percent shooting.
