December 02, 2007 | Men's Basketball
Malik Perry, Melvin Goins and Rashaun McLemore each scored 12 points, but the Crusaders used eight second-half three-pointers to prevent a BSU rally.
The loss drops BSU to 0-6 overall, while Valpo improved to 6-1.
“We need intensity and focus on defense,” said first-year head coach Billy Taylor. “Hopefully this team is learning that at this level you can't ever relax on defense.”
After trailing 34-21 at halftime, the Cardinals scored their first 18 points of the second half between Perry, Goins and McLemore.
The scoring rally pulled BSU to as close as 37-33 at one point during the stretch, but seven of Valpo's next eight field goals came from beyond the arc, as the lead returned to double figures.
The 12 points from Goins was a new BSU career-high, while McLemore reached double figures for the second straight contest.
Perry grabbed nine rebounds, while senior Peyton Stovall pulled in seven boards to go along with eight points.
The effort on the boards ? including 12 offensive rebounds -- helped
“There were a lot of positives from this game, just not the outcome,”
Shawn Huff paced three Crusaders in double figures with 17 points. Valpo finished the contest shooting 46 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three-point range.
The Cardinals, in the midst of the second-longest road trip in their 87-year history, return to action with a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday at Purdue.
