Abby Richter enters her second season as Ball State Assistant Coach under head coach Michelle Salmon. Richter is responsible for the Cardinal goalkeepers, oversee the team academics and assists in the Cardinals recruiting process.
Under her guidance, the Cardinals posted seven shutouts last season on its way to the 2006 Mid-American Conference regular season championship. The seven shutouts were second most in the MAC while sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Murphy led the way as she played every single minute in net for the Cardinals. Murphy finished fourth in the MAC with a 1.05 goals against average.
Richter joined the Cardinals after serving one year as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where she was the team travel coordinator and goalkeeping coach. Additionally, she oversaw the academic progress of the student-athletics and assisted in the recruiting process.
Before her position at Iowa, Richter spent two years as an assistant coach for the Maccabi U.S. Open Women’s National Team, which won the silver medal at the 17th Maccabiah Games. She will be traveling with the team this December to Argentina for the Pan-American games.
From 2003-05, Richter was the graduate assistant coach at Kent State University. She also coached for the Greater Akron Premier team as the U-11 coach and goalkeeping coach. Before her stint at Kent State, she was the assistant coach at Earlham College and assistant varsity coach at Southwest High School in Green Bay, Wis.
A 2001 graduate of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Richter earned a bachelor’s degree in broad field social science and history with a teacher certification for grades five through 12. Richter also starred on the field at Wisconsin-Stevens Points as a goalkeeper and four-year starter. As a senior, she led the Pointers to the NCAA Division III semifinals and was a Central Region All-America selection.
She also received a master’s degree in sports and recreational management from Kent State in 2005. Richter obtained a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level One diploma and received her USSF D License.
Richter and her husband Jeremy live in Muncie.
