Buffalo (5-2-1, 1-1 MAC) fell 1-0 in its league opener at Eastern Michigan last Thursday before beating Miami 3-0 on Sunday at home. The Bulls' only other loss came at No. 17 Michigan State by a score of 2-1 on Aug. 28.
Shawn Burke is in his seventh season as the head coach at Buffalo, as the Bulls were picked to finish second in the MAC preseason coaches poll.
Buffalo paces the MAC in goal differential (+10), goals-against average (.625), shots per game (16.0) and total goals (15) so far a year after falling in the MAC Tournament championship game to Western Michigan.
Junior goalkeeper Lexie Thompson leads the league in shutouts (four) and goals-against average (.640) while ranking second in the MAC in save percentage (.833). Graduate forward Jasmine Guerber has the most assists (four) and shots per game (3.0) in the conference.
Ball State gets the weekend off from competition and will next face Ohio in Athens on Thursday, Oct. 2.
ROAD RUNNERS: The Ball State soccer team has won each of its last four road matches and is 4-1 overall on the year away from Muncie.
The 2023 Cardinals won 5-0 on Oct. 8 in the last Ball State soccer contest at Buffalo, where Ball State leads 8-6-1 in the all-time series.
FIRST HALF SHUTDOWN: The Ball State defense hasn't yielded a first half goal in more than a month and has allowed only two in the first nine matches this season.
Purdue scored two goals in the first half of the season opener on Aug. 17, but the Cardinals shut down the next eight opponents in the opening 45 minutes of each game
CHESTER CHURNING OUT GOALS: Senior forward Addie Chester added to her Mid-American Conference leading goals total with a pair in the 2-2 draw with Butler on Sept. 7 to increase it to six goals on the season. The Muncie native was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks thanks to the performance.
Chester is only the sixth MAC women's soccer player in the last 15 seasons (since 2011) to score six goals in her team's first five matches of the season. She begins this week ranking No. 42 in NCAA Division I in goals per game (0.67) and No. 33 in points per game (1.67).
The Muncie native has improved her Ball State career totals to 16 goals, 11 assists and 43 points with the strong start to the season. Chester is 9th, T-10th and T-8th in those categories, respectively, in school history.
Chester paces the Mid-American Conference in goals (six), points (14) and game-winning goals (two) so far this season.
CALDWELL CAREER MILESTONE LOOKOUT: Senior forward Delaney Caldwell recorded goals in the season opener vs Purdue on Aug. 17 and last Thursday vs Central Michigan, but is within striking distance of setting a program record in another category.
Caldwell is three assists away from tying Ehren Reagor's program record of 18 in a career, while she is one point and three goals away from cracking the Top 5 in those career categories as well.
