Former Ball State men’s golfer James Blackwell returned to his alma mater in the fall of 2018 to serve as the Cardinals’ graduate assistant coach.
Blackwell has helped coach Ball State to four top-3 tournament finishes against a challenging national schedule over the past two seasons, including a 15-stroke victory at the 2019 Golfweek Conference Challenge. The win vaulted the Cardinals to their all-time high national ranking of No. 20 by Golfweek. In his first season in 2018-19, BSU set a school record for team scoring average at 292.62.
Blackwell lettered four years for the Cardinals from 2012-16, teeing it up in 39 tournaments. He had his best year as a senior, competing in all 14 of the Cardinals’ events with a stroke average of 75.62 and four top-20 finishes.
The Buffalo, New York, native capped his career with an appearance at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where he placed fifth in the men’s individual invitational portion.
Blackwell carded his career-best scores of 68 for 18 holes and 216 for 54 holes at the 2015 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. He led Ball State with a tie for 13th at the 2014 MAC Championships and also demonstrated a knack for the purest form of golf, going 6-1-1 over three appearances at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play.
Prior to his collegiate career, Blackwell won the 2011 New York State Golf Association Junior Amateur championship and was named the 2011 Buffalo District Golf Association Junior Player of the Year. He was runner-up in the 2012 International Junior Masters and the youngest player in the field for the 54th Porter Cup.
Blackwell earned his bachelor’s degree in human resource management in 2016 and his MBA in 2020, both from Ball State.
