Day 1 Indoor Track Results from Hoosier Horsepower Classic
January 16, 2026 | Track & Field
INDIANAPOLIS -- Bella Jackson and Kylee Marshall turned in Ball State's highest finishes on Friday, and Laya'Lapri Ratney qualified for Saturday's finals in a pair of sprint events as the Cardinals completed Day 1 of the Hoosier Horsepower Classic at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion in Indianapolis. It is the first of three events in which the Cardinals will participate on the site of the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The Cardinals' most dramatic finish came in the collegiate division of the high jump at nearly 8 p.m., when senior transfer Bella Jackson dueled with Lewis University's Karmen Kurowicka for the final height. Both missed in three attempts at 1.74 meters and Kurowicka earned the win by virtue of winning the 1.71m height in just one try. Jackson had missed her first attempt before advancing on her second.
In fact, Jackson joined sophomore Lexi Hale as two of the events' three finalists, all clearing the 1.65m height and Hale reaching the mark and tying her career-best for the second week in a row. But while Hale couldn't get over the mark at 1.71 meters, Jackson and Kurowicka both advanced for their final showdown.
In the collegiate division of the long jump, Marshall finished second on Friday, after earning first place a week ago in the long jump at the Badgers Midwest Invite.
Ratney, meanwhile, won her heat in the 60m hurdles and finished second in her heat in the 60m dash, qualifying for finals races in both events on Saturday. Trailing Ratney (7.73) by just 2/100th's of a second in the 60m dash, Alana Springer (7.75) also qualified for Saturday's final race. Later in the evening, Springer finished seventh overall in the 200m dash, with Marshall two spots behind in ninth.
In the 60m hurdles, Ratney led three Cardinals who qualified for the finals, with freshman Lia Patterson setting a personal record to enter the finals as the seventh of eight qualifiers, behind Ratney (3rd) and Kenli Nettles (6th) who both won their heats.
Among other top finishers in Friday's events, junior high-jumper Malina Miller cleared a height of 1.74m, just shy of her personal best of 1.75m, to finish fifth in the invite division. Similarly, in the invite division of the long jump, Nettles finished fourth and freshman Anisa Barnett posted a personal record while finishing fifth. Mikayla Mimnaugh finished fourth in the 600m dash. Freshman Emily Decker finished the 3000m in a personal-best time of 10:01.14, to finish in seventh place.
Competition resumes Saturday at 9:45 a.m., with the shot put, followed by sprint finals in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash.
