Field Hockey Falls to UC Davis in Heartbreaking OT Loss

With the loss, Ball State drops to 1-3 while UC Davis improves to 2-1.Â

The Cardinals and the Aggies played neck-and-neck the first 30 minutes of action. It was a game of defense and ball control that allowed Ball State to keep UC Davis to only one goal in the first stanza.Â

The Cardinals then answered in the second period as Reagan Kunkle found the back of the cage at the 24:12 mark to knot the score 1-1.Â

With the game tied at the break, Ball State came out of the gates strong in the second half of play. Julia Verratti found the back of the cage at the 36:45 mark and then Jade Vandevoorde added another score with the assist from Braiden Scheffler to put the Cardinals up 3-1 late in the third frame.Â

UC Davis answered with a goal at the start of the final stanza, but Ball State's Ellie Francois grabbed her first goal of the season after Emily Kate Covert assisted Francois to complete the play, giving BSU the 4-2 edge over the Aggies.Â

UC Davis then controlled the offensive tempo the remainder of the contest tacking on two late scores to knot the game 4-4 and send the contest into the extra period.Â

After drawing back-to-back penalty corners, UC Davis capitalized on the second attempt for the victory.Â

In goal for BSU was Cali Hyman who had four saves and was up against 19 shots.Â

The Ball State field hockey team will close out its three-game weekend in the Golden State when it plays at Cal Berkley on Sunday at 4 pm ET.
