Clokie’s OT Game-Winner Lifts Field Hockey Past Longwood

With the win, Ball State improved to 3-5 overall and has now started conference action 1-0 while Longwood drops to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in MAC play.
Clokie netted the game-winning goal just three minutes into OT after teammate Emma van Hal dished out the assist. The goal marked Clokie's fifth of her career.
Both teams came ready to play with a high intensity for their first MAC game. Longwood would get on the board first after a score from Channy Johnson which occurred late in the first quarter.
The Cardinals were able to adjust their defense in the second stanza, which caused the Lancers some offensive trouble. Ball State took advantage of the opportunity with a Jessica Rochat goal at the 22:36 mark to knot the contest 1-1. The goal was the first for Rochat as a Cardinal.
BSU continued to control the tempo of the game and would add another score at the 29:34 mark. This time the goal was scored by Ellie Francois with Rochat earning the assist to give the Cardinals the 2-1 edge at intermission. The goal was Francois second of her career.
After the break, emotions were high, and the Cardinals carried their first half momentum into the third quarter as Lauren Lewis found the back of the cage for her first career score with just a little over three minutes shaved off the clock. Emily Kate Covert was awarded the assist for the goal which gave Ball State the 3-1 advantage versus the Lancers.
Longwood didn't give up though and would add two goals in the final 15 minutes of action to tie the game 3-3 with just nine minutes remaining in regulation. Both squads remained scoreless the rest of the contest which would then send the game into an extra period.
Defensively, Carleigh Hofelich was in goal again for BSU earning her second victory along with collecting seven saves.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to non-conference play when it travels to Virginia Commonwealth Sunday. The game is slated for 1 pm ET.
