Strong Start Not Enough for Baseball in Opener at Ohio
May 09, 2025 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team got off to a strong start and got a big game by Ty Davis but fell 5-4 at Ohio on Friday night at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Cardinals (32-18, 18-7 Mid-American Conference) led 3-0 after the first inning following an RBI double from Davis to score Alex Richter and a two-run home run to right field by Blake Bevis. The host Bobcats (12-34, 7-18 MAC) scored twice in the second frame to get within a run at 3-2.
Davis launched a solo homer to right field in the fourth to tack on a tally for the Cardinals as part of his 3-for-4 outing with two runs and two RBI. Ohio had a three-run rally in the sixth on a two-run double and another run-scoring two-base hit to take a 5-4 lead. That proved to be the final offense of the day as neither team crossed home plate from there.
Joining Davis with multiple hits for the Cardinals were Richter and Houston King with two each.
Ball State starting pitcher Keegan Johnson struck out six in 5.1 innings of three-run ball. Ohio starter Blake Gaskey (4-5) went 6.2 innings and allowed four runs to be credited with the win. Jack Geiser came on to get the final three outs and earn his third save of the season.
Owen Quinn (4-2) allowed two runs in 2.2 frames to suffer the loss.
"Ohio played a clean game with no walks, HBP or errors," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "They earned the right to win."
Ball State and Ohio are scheduled to play the middle game of the set at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
