Richter Sets New Record for HBP in a Season

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State offense got out to another hot start and kept going to lead the Cardinals to a 10-5 win over Ohio on Saturday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.

The Cardinals (33-18, 19-7 Mid-American Conference) plated four runs in the first inning on a three-run double from Nick Husovsky and RBI single by Max Kalk on their way to evening the series with the Bobcats (12-35, 7-19 MAC).

Ohio crossed home plate once each in the first and third frames to get within two runs before Ty Davis hit a sacrifice fly and Houston King rapped a two-run single in the sixth to put the Cardinals ahead 7-2. Korbin Griffin (solo) and Alex Richter (two-run) added insurance homers in the ninth for the visitors.

Richter got hit by a pitch in the first inning to break a tie with Ryan Read from 1995 for the most times being hit by a pitch in a season in program history. Richter has now been plunked 25 times this year.

Ball State starting pitcher Jacob Hartlaub (6-2) got the win by striking out two in 6.1 innings of five-run ball. Garrett Harker came on to get the final eight outs for the Cardinals and earn his eighth save of the season.

"Our boys were gritty," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "Hartlaub and Harker led us on mound. Husovsky, King and Richter with multiple-RBI hits. A big team win!"

Ohio starter Hudson Boncal (2-6) gave up five runs in 5.1 frames to be hit with the loss.

The Cardinals have now scored in the first inning in each of the last four games, putting up 13 runs in the opening frame in those contests combined.

Ball State and Ohio are set to play the rubber match of the three-game set at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
