May 06, 2025 | Baseball
The Cardinals (32-17) got on the board in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ty Davis that plated Alex Richter after Richter and Dylan Grego led off the game with back-to-back singles. The Boilermakers responded with two runs in both the first and second frames to claim a 4-1 lead.
Kalk came to the plate following Blake Bevis being hit by a pitch and Korbin Griffin singling and drilled a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right field for his first homer of the year.
Purdue (29-19) responded with eight runs in the fourth on its way to the 13th home win of the season for the hosts
In addition to Richter, Grego, Griffin and Kalk, Davis and Blake Bevis had hits as Cardinals in the starting lineup. Brayden Huebner pinch hit late and knocked a single to center field.
Will Jacobson (1-1) allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of work for the Cardinals to suffer the loss. Purdue's Joe Trenberry (1-0) pitched 2.2 shutout frames out of the bullpen to be credited with the win.
Ball State and Purdue are set for a rematch next Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Muncie.
The Cardinals will next return to Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Ohio scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
