Baseball Tops Ohio 6-3 in Sunday Afternoon Series-Clinching Win
May 11, 2025 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team used a big day at the plate by Dylan Grego and strong pitching performances by the duo of Brendan Garza and Alex Burden to beat Ohio 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Cardinals (34-18, 20-7 Mid-American Conference) jumped on the Bobcats (12-36, 7-20 MAC) early again, as Ben Giovannetti had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Grego hit a two-run home run in the second to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Ohio scored once in the fourth on an RBI double to cut Ball State's edge to 3-1, but the Cardinals responded with three runs in the sixth frame on run-scoring singles from Grego and Nick Husovsky and a sac fly by Ty Davis to open up a 6-1 advantage. The hosts plated two tallies in the bottom half of the sixth, but that was all the scoring for the remainder of the contest.
Brendan Garza (2-0) struck out five in 5.1 innings of three-run ball to be credited with his second win of the year, and Owen Quinn came on in the sixth to induce an inning-ending double play with the help of an interference call.
Alex Burden entered with runners on first and second and no outs in the seventh and proceeded to sandwich a flyout with a pair of strikeouts to get out the jam. The left-handed pitcher worked 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Grego went 3-for-4 with the homer, a walk, three RBI and three runs scored on the day. Alex Richter and Garrett Arnold each had a pair of hits and a walk for the afternoon.
"We got excellent pitching from Brendan Garza and Alex Burden," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "Dylan Grego led us offensively. A great team effort in giving us a series win."
Ohio starting pitcher Hunter Winston (1-3) allowed three runs in five innings to suffer the loss.
Ball State returns home to host Purdue at 3 p.m. on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series against Miami (OH) starting at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Cardinals enter the final homestand one game back of Kent State and Miami in the MAC standings.
