Late Rally Falls Short for Baseball in 4-3 Setback to Miami
May 15, 2025 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team rallied in the ninth and got the winning run to the plate but fell 4-3 to Miami (OH) on Thursday afternoon at Shebek Stadium.
The Cardinals (34-19, 20-8 Mid-American Conference) had a Blake Bevis solo home run to left field to lead off the ninth inning. One batter later, Gavin Balius walked to put the tying run aboard with one out, but Miami (31-20, 22-6 MAC) got the next two hitters out to secure the series opener.
The RedHawks scored once in the first frame and twice in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead, eventually extending it to 4-0 with a tally in the top half of the sixth. Ty Davis responded with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame to get the hosts back within two runs.
Ball State starting pitcher Keegan Johnson (7-3) struck out two and allowed one run in three innings but suffered the loss. Miami's starter Cooper Katskee (10-1) was credited with the win after striking out three in 5.1 innings of two-run ball. Carson Byers got the final 11 outs of the game for the visitors to earn his fifth save of the year.
Nick Husovsky went 2-for-3 with a walk as the lone Ball State player with multiple hits on the day. Alex Burden (3.0 innings, three strikeouts, one run) and Garrett Harker (2.1 shutout innings) kept the Cardinals in the game in the later innings.
"A solid game between two good teams," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "I loved the way Burden and Harker battled on the mound. We had a few opportunities early and just couldn't break through."
Ball State and Miami are set for a 3:05 p.m. start time on Friday. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to recognize the Ball State seniors in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
