Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at EMU Including 4-2 Decision in 14-Inning Nightcap
April 04, 2025 | Baseball
Dylan Grego had the game-winning single in the second game, while the Ball State pitching staff limited the Eagles to nine hits in 21 innings on the day.
"Our players played their hearts out all day," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "We had outstanding pitching in both games. Game two was a great battle between two good teams. A great game with great pitching and defense from both teams. Fortunately for us we got the timely hit. So many guys contributed."
Game 1 – Ball State 13, Eastern Michigan 2 (7 innings)
The Cardinals (22-10, 9-2 Mid-American Conference) put up five runs in the first inning on their way to the series opening win over the host Eagles (13-14, 8-6 MAC).
Grego got the scoring started with an RBI single before Garrett Arnold cleared the bases with a three-run double. Houston King brought home Arnold on a grounder for the early 5-0 advantage.
After Eastern scored twice in the second, Brayden Huebner hit a sacrifice fly in the third frame to plate King and give the visitors a 6-2 edge. Ball State put up seven runs in the fifth, including a two-run double by Jacobs, for the game's final scoring.
Keegan Johnson (6-0) struck out 10 and allowed three hits and two runs in six innings to remain with a perfect record on the year, and Zach Kwasny tossed a shutout seventh to close the game out. Eastern Michigan's starter Bobby Jones (1-2) gave up six runs in two frames to be hit with the loss.
Game 2 – Ball State 4, Eastern Michigan 2 (14 innings)
Grego, the reigning MAC Co-Player of the Week, kept the production going with a go-ahead single to score Jacobs in the 14th inning to lead the Cardinals to a doubleheader sweep.
Jacobs reached base to start the inning on a walk and stole second before advancing to third base on a Gavin Balius groundout. Alex Richter got hit by a pitch to set up the Grego game-winner down the right field line. Arnold drew a bases-loaded free pass to score Richter for an insurance run.
The only scoring during regulation occurred in the fifth inning, when Richter drove in Jacobs and Korbin Griffin on a double to right field and the Eagles responded with a two-run single. Ball State starter
Jacob Hartlaub worked eight innings for the second straight game and punched out six while allowing only three hits.
Junior Owen Quinn came on in relief for Hartlaub and pitched four shutout innings before Garrett Harker (2-1) worked the final two frames to earn the victory in the longest Ball State baseball game by innings since April 18, 2018 at Indiana when that team also played 14 innings.
