MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (11-9, 4-5 MAC) completed a 5-2 comeback victory over Northern Illinois (9-13, 1-8 MAC) Thursday afternoon at the Foster Adams Family Tennis Complex and Bill Richards Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals played a highly competitive doubles competition but fell in the final minutes to the Huskies.
Finishing first, was the NIU twosome of Chia Bo Suo Nan and Pratyaksh LNU as the duo defeated BSU's No. 3 doubles tandem of Andrew Hayward and Jenson Bicanic by a 6-4 decision.
Two courts remained and were neck-and-neck with the No. 2 slot tied at 5-5 and the top court was in a match tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Nathaniel Webster alongside Jacks Lancaster fell to Iker Arrastia Gaztambide and Federico Scotuzzi, 7-6 (7-1) to give the Huskies the doubles point.
Ball State's comeback win began early on in singles play as Sajin Smith breezed by Sam Klein at the No. 5 slot with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Shortly after, Andrew Hayward gave BSU its first lead 2-1 with his exciting two set tiebreaker win over NIU's No. 4 singles player LNU, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
After that, the Huskies managed to knot the score 2-2 with their defeat over Webster on the top court. But the Cardinals remained in good shape as they had already taken four of the six first frames against the Huskies.
With three courts remaining, Tran was playing a tight match over Federico Scotuzzi at No. 3 singles. Tran finally prevailed by beating Scotuzzi, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Today's match point would fall on either the shoulders of Lancaster on court two or Broc Fletcher who was in the sixth slot.
Lancaster earned a come-from-behind three-set thriller to claim match point for BSU. Lancaster fought back after dropping the first set 6-2 to Saul Berdullas, taking frames two (6-3) and three (6-2) to seal the win.
Fletcher rounded out the victories as he finished his competitor off 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 for the Cardinals fifth and final point.
The Ball State men's tennis team will close out its Mid-American Conference regular season action when it hosts the UIC Flames on Saturday at the Foster Adams Family Tennis Complex and Bill Richards Tennis Courts. First serve is at 1 pm
