Cardinals Strong In B1G Win Over Maryland

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- In what was the 990th coaching victory of Rich Maloney's career, it was a freshman in his second college appearance that provided the difference for Ball State in a 5-3 win over Maryland in the Swig & Swine Classic.
Making his first college start at catcher, DJ Scheumann drilled a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield fence and drove in Dylan Grego in the bottom of the sixth inning to provide the deciding runs and break a 3-3 deadlock. It was the first homer of his college career and kept Ball State (2-0) unbeaten as it heads into a second game later today against UMass-Lowell.
Keegan Johnson fired six innings to record the win for Ball State. He struck out four and walked none, while allowing five hits and three runs. Garrett Harker earned a three-inning save while shutting out the Terrapins with five strikeouts over the 7th, 8th and 9th innings.
Ball State struck first with three runs in the opening frame, two coming on a single to rightfield by Clay Jacobs. Maryland scored its first run in the third inning, then got solo home runs in the fifth and sixth, but never crossed the plate against Harker.
"Keegan Johnson and Garrett Harker were outstanding!," exclaimed Maloney, just 10 wins from his milestone 1,000th victory, all against Division I competition. "Big hits from Jacobs and Scheumann led us. We played a fundamentally sound game."
