Cardinals Place Three Golfers in Top 10 of Golfweek Individual Event at Delaware Country Club
September 16, 2024 | Men's Golf
Three Ball State men's golfers turned in top-ten finishes Monday afternoon to cap an individual event at Delaware Country Club that featured 30 golfers among eight schools. In conjunction with Ball State, Golfweek hosted the 'Put Me In Coach' Invitational to provide opportunity for individual golfers without team scoring.
"The 'Put Me In Coach Invite' was a huge success!," said longtime Cardinals coach Mike Fleck. "Delaware Country Club was in phenomenal condition and their staff, along with Lance Ringler from GolfWeek, made the experience a great one for the student-athletes."
The event also served as the collegiate debut for Cardinal freshmen Happy Gilmore and Gavin Hare, who showcased their first tournament wearing Ball State colors with top-five finishes: Gilmore tied for third and Hare in fifth.
Gilmore (72-67-71--210) finished at even par while tied with Missouri's Trent Mieri. Gilmore's best round came Monday's second round, firing the best round of the tournament with five birdies and an eagle on the par-4 third hole. Hare (69-75-69--213) tied for fifth place while boasting a pair of sub-par rounds. The brother of Ball State senior golfer Griffin Hare, Gavin tied with the other member of Missouri's sibling duo, Trevor Mieri.
The Ball State freshmen finished 1-2 in the tournament with 13 birdies by Gilmore and 12 by Hare. Hare also shared distinction with teammate Colin Nasser as the only players in the tournament to finish under par in more than one round.

"I'm very proud of how our two freshman preformed in their collegiate debuts," added Fleck. "Happy posted the low round of the tournament in round two (67) and had a putt on his last hole to get himself in the playoff that lipped out. Gavin posting two under-par rounds for the event was awesome to see and he played very well.
Â
Nasser (69-69-76--214), a redshirt junior, finished his first event of the year with a score of 214, putting him in eighth place with Middle Tennessee State's Charlie Bell. Senior Drew Todd (73-71-76--220) tied Bowling Green's Andrew Lee in 18th.
Â
"Our veteran guys made good use of a great experience. Colin was tied for the lead after two rounds and Drew played some solid golf as well. These reps, experience and tournament feels will help develop our guys as they go through the season for sure," assured Fleck.
