Women’s Golf Opens Busy Week by Hosting the Brittany Kelly Classic

MUNCIE, Ind. - - A busy week for the Ball State women's golf team gets underway Monday when it opens play in the third annual Brittany Kelly Classic at The Players Club at Woodland Trails in Yorktown, Indiana.
The two-day event, named in honor of former Ball State women's golf standout Brittany Kelly (2007-11), will feature 54 holes of action on the 72-par, 6,262-yard course. The opening two rounds take place Monday (Sept. 16) starting at 8:30 a.m., while the final round tees off at 9 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 17). Both days will feature shotgun starts.
Joining the Cardinals will be Mid-American Conference rivals Ohio and Western Michigan, along with Butler, Cleveland State, Dayton, Green Bay, IU Indy, Lindenwood, UIC, Valparaiso, and Western Illinois.

Kelly, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the fall of 2019, was named the 2022 Indiana PGA Golf Professional of the Year. The first female recipient of the honor, which originated in 1955, Kelly started her professional career at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers and most recently worked at Woodland Country Club in Carmel.
In addition, for her contributions over her entire golf career (starting as a player in junior events with the Indiana Junior Tour), the Indiana Section of the PGA named the Indiana PGA Women's Player of the Year Award in Kelly's honor.
At Ball State, Kelly was a three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection and a two-time All-American Scholar over her career which spanned from 2007-08 to 2010-11. She became the first Ball State women's golfer selected for an NCAA Regional during a phenomenal senior season in 2010-11. She finished her career with BSU records for single-season scoring average (75.06), career scoring average (76.43) and 54-hole tournament score (215).
She passed away at the age of 32 on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, just prior to her induction into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following the Brittany Kelly Classic, the Cardinals close the week by competing in the 50th Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman. The three-day, 13-team event runs Friday-Sunday and will be contested at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, North Carolina.
NEWS & NOTES:
- Ball State is the defending team champion of the Brittany Kelly Classic, winning the event with a team score of +11 (875) last season … The 875 was the lowest 54-hole score in program history at the time and 14 strokes better than second-place UIC's +25 (889) … Ball State beat the team mark later in the year with a +1 (865) at the Diamante Intercollegiate.
- The Ball State women's golf program returns eight of nine golfers from last season's squad which produced a new program standard for scoring average at 303.61 strokes … They also helped the team establish program records for lowest team round (285 / -3), lowest 36-hole total (580 / +4) and lowest 54-hole total (865 / +1).
- Junior Jasmine Driscoll enters the Brittany Kelly Classic 76.52 career scoring average … It's currently the third-best individual career average in program history trailing only Kiah Parrott's (2021-24) mark of 76.06 and Brittany Kelly's (2008-11) average of 76.43 … … She has played eight career rounds at-or-below par, with a career-low round of 68 in the third round of the 2023 Boilermaker Classic.
- Junior Sarah Gallagher is not far behind with a 76.56 average … Gallagher earned Second Team All-MAC honors and MAC All-Tournament Team accolades after placing fourth at the MAC Championships with a score of +9 (225) … She has played seven career rounds at-or-below par, with a career-low round of 71 on three occasions.
- Sophomore JJ Gregston led the Cardinals at the 2024 Boilermaker Classic, finishing tied for 37th overall among the 87-player field with a score of +15 (231) … She started the year with Ball State's lowest round of the season to date, carding an opening-round +3 (75) … Gregston owns three collegiate rounds at-or-below par, including a career-best round of 70 to open the 2023 Brittany Kelly Classic.
- Junior Madelin Boyd made her season debut at the Boilermaker Classic, including an opening-round score of +5 (77) … It tied as Ball State's third-lowest round of the event and was nearly one stroke off her season average from a year ago … Boyd owns a career-low round of 69 in the first round of the 2023 Diamante Intercollegiate.
- Freshman Sophie Korthuijs made her collegiate debut at the Boilermaker Classic, including firing Ball State's second-lowest round of the tournament with a 76 in the second round … She finished the event tied for 53rd at +18 (234) and led the Cardinals with 34 pars over her 54 holes.
- Three Cardinals will be making there 2024-25 debuts at the 2024 Brittany Kelly Classic … Senior Payton Bennett, sophomore Jenna Estravillo and sophomore Madelyn Young will be teeing off for the first time in competition this season.
