Kuntz Ties For Third Place to Lead Cardinal Golfers in Greensboro
September 10, 2024 | Men's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Braxton Kuntz shot sub-par golf for the third straight day and tangled with tournament leaders all the way through the final hole Tuesday, finishing in a third-place tie with Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti. Kuntz and Delisanti both fired 2-under-par rounds of 70 during their final trip along the 7,276-yard track at Bryan Park near Greensboro, finishing at 210 for the tournament – one shot behind Markus Lam of Boston College, and two strokes behind champion Kelvin Hernandez from UNC Greensboro.
Kuntz shot 71-69-70—210 over the three-day event that marked the opening of the fall season for Ball State. He was in seventh-place following Round 1, but rose into contention during Round 2 and was as high as second place during parts of Tuesday's final round.
His final round was marked by six birdies that countered three holes of bogey. In a shotgun start in which he began play on the sixth hole, Kuntz shot bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, costing him a tie with Lam for second place.
As a team, Ball State matched its opening round, shooting 10-over par and slipping from seventh to eighth place. Kash Bellar (75-74-76—225) was second on the Cardinals' leaderboard, followed by Ali Khan (76-76-74—226). Avery Mahoney (79-72-79—230) sandwiched a round of par on Monday around two rounds at +7, to finished tied with Carter Smith (76-76-78—230). Griffin Hare (78-77-74—229), playing as an individual, saved his best round for the final round, finishing at 2-over par.
Ball State coach Mike Fleck was particularly pleased with Kuntz' effort, while turning his focus to next week's Golfweek individual tournament at Delaware Country Club in Muncie: "I'm really proud of the consistent and competitive week Braxton displayed. Being under par all three rounds allowed him to get off to a great start to the fall season. We will now get some of our guys ready for the individual event coming up this weekend."
