MUNCIE, Ind. – Traveling to face an AP Top 10 team for the ninth time in program history, the Ball State Cardinals venture to South Florida this week to face the No. 10-ranked Miami Hurricanes.
Â
** The 100th season of Ball State football continues Saturday with a top-ten test against Miami, who moved up to No. 10 in the AP Top 25 poll following a 56-9 win last week over Florida A&M. It will be the ninth time Ball State will line up against a Top-10 opponent.
Â
** Ball State enters the contest following a 42-34 win over Missouri State in which the Cardinals dominated time of possession and held a two-touchdown cushion through most of the fourth period. It reflected the most points by a Ball State team in its season opener since a 42-6 win in 2018 over Central Connecticut.
Â
** The 100th anniversary of Ball State's first season in 1924 coincides with the 100th season on the field, given that the Cardinals didn't field a team in 1943 due to World War II. Season-long celebrations of the 100th season will be displayed at Scheumann Stadium this season.
Â
** Redshirt freshman QB Kadin Semonza starred in last Saturday's opener, completing four passes for touchdowns among 262 passing yards. He was 28-of-39 through the air, with just one interception. His 71.8% completion percentage was the best by a Ball State quarterback with more than 30 throws in a season opener since at least 2000. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, accounting for five touchdowns overall - the most by a Ball State QB since Drew Plitt had five agianst Central Michigan in 2020.
Â
** Ball State's defense limited the Bears to just 62 net rushing yards, and just six first downs through three quarters (1 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd). Missouri State possessed the ball for just over six minutes by halftime and only 12 minutes through three periods. Linebackers Joey Stemler and Keionte Newson paced Cardinals tacklers with seven and six stops, respectively. Stemler added an interception and Newson had a pair of TFL.
Â
WHAT A WIN MEANS:
** The Cardinals will begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2013 when the Cardinals beat Illinois State and Army to start the year.
** Ball State will defeat an AP Top 10-ranked opponent for the first time in its history.
** The fifth winningest coach in Ball State football history, Mike Neu will capture his 39th victory as head coach of his alma mater to move within one victory of tying Dwight Wallace (40) with the fourth-most wins in Cardinals history.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
Â
5 - Kadin Semonza threw for four TDs and ran for another vs. Missouri St. His 5 TDR were the most by a Cardinals player since 2020.
Â
6 - Six times in the past two seasons, Ball State has limited its opposition to less than 100 rush yards. Missouri State had 62.
Â
100 - The 100th year of Ball State football coincides with the 100th anniversary of its first season in 1924. The all-time record: 477-456-32.
