MUNCIE, Ind. – While the Ball State football program begins its 100th season and celebrates the 100th anniversary
of the program's beginning in 1924, Ball State Athletics has launched voting for the Ball State Football All-Century Team sponsored by Gainbridge. A state-of-the-art website produced by Ball State University Digital Corps welcomes students, alumni and fans to vote for their favorite players at BallStateSports.com/100.
Balloting for the All-Century Team is comprised of 110 nominees who starred among the program's 100 years of playing the sport – first in the college division in the mid-1900s at the original Ball Field, and now in NCAA Division I FBS competition at Scheumann Stadium. The 110 nominees consist of every All-American, every All-MAC first-team selection and every player ever selected in the NFL draft.
Online voting by fans opens on Thursday, Sept. 4 and lasts through the day on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The All-Century Team will be named during the Cardinals' final regular season home game on Saturday, Nov. 23. Fans may vote as often as they like, though just once per day.
Nominees include current Ball State coach Mike Neu, who played quarterback and was the 1993 MAC Offensive Player of the Year while leading the Cardinals to a MAC title and a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl. Former coach Brady Hoke played defensive line for his alma mater and also is on the ballot, alongside other stars of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Other favorite names on the ballot will include Nate Davis, who paced the 2008 Cardinals to an unbeaten regular season; and linebacker Brandon Martin and receiver Justin Hall paced the 2020 Cardinals to a MAC championship and bowl victory.
Players from early years include Timmy Brown, a 1950s running back who starred for the NFL Philadelphia Eagles, and offensive linemen Art King and Ralph Cook who were the first Cardinals ever selected in the NFL draft. Brown, the school's first All-American in 1958, joins a dozen other All-Americans as All-Century Team nominees including Brad Maynard, a punter who remains the only special teams player ever named a Division I conference MVP.
"I have enjoyed learning about the rich history of Ball State football as we have prepared for the celebration of the 100th year of Cardinal football," said Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "I look forward to the excitement around our fan selection of the All-Century Team. There are numerous players across the decades that have contributed to the program's success."
The Cardinals' 100th season begins Saturday at Scheumann Stadium against non-conference opponent Missouri State, prior to road bouts at Miami (Fla.), Central Michigan and James Madison.
Fans will return to The Scheu on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Community and Family Weekend date against Western Michigan. Ball State Athletics hosts an annual Hall of Fame induction on Friday, Oct. 4, when All-Century nominees Keith Wenning and Sean Baker will be inducted with other prominent Cardinals stars.
Alumni return on Saturday, Oct. 26 when the annual homecoming game is conducted against Northern Illinois. A Tuesday night #MAC-tion contest welcomes Miami (Ohio) before the final home date on Nov. 23 vs. Bowling Green, when the All-Century team will be unveiled.
All-Century voting continues throughout the 2024 season, with voting updates in October and again in November.
