March 02, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (25-4, 14-3 MAC) closed out its home portion of the regular season with a 75-44 victory over Eastern Michigan (6-21, 2-14 MAC) Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals ended their regular season at home with a 13-1 record.
For the second-straight game, the Cardinals' defense has held their respective opponent to less than 50 points.
Both teams struggled on offense to open the ball game but on the other hand the Cardinals' defense stood out which helped Ball State take the 15-9 first quarter lead over Eastern Michigan.
Nyla Hampton opened the second stanza with a running jumper and a steal that put the Cardinals up by 10 (19-9) over the Eagles. But the Cardinals offense still struggled throughout the second 10 minutes of play. Thankfully, the Eagles weren't making baskets either. After some scoreless minutes, Ally Becki nailed a 3-pointer off the dribble to make it a 24-13 ball game at the 2:50 mark. Ball State was able to score a few more points before to end of the first half to take a 30-20 edge over Eastern Michigan at intermission.
After the break, the Cardinals continued to struggle offensively at the start of the third stanza but began returning to their old ways later in the frame. Ball State outpaced Eastern Michigan in the third 20-13 to take a 50-33 lead over the Eagles as both teams headed into the last 10 minutes of play.
The Cardinals continued to control the tempo the remainder of the contest and never lost sight despite their offensive woes. As always, Ball State can find ways to score especially behind the arc as back-to-back 3's from Madelyn Bischoff and Ana Barreto helped propel the Cardinals to 61-37 cushion with 6:15 left to play. The final stanza was highlighted by Annie Rauch scoring her 1,000th point as the Cardinals went on to win their 25th contest of the season.
For the game, Hampton was one-shy of her season best after leading the Cardinals offensively with 18 points. Rauch wasn't too far behind Hampton as she chipped in 17 points while Alex Richard rounded out the double digit scoring with 10.
The Ball State women's basketball team will close out the Mid-American Conference regular season action with two contests on the road. The Cardinals will play on national television on Wednesday at Kent State at 5 pm ET on ESPNU. After that, Ball State will end regular season action at Buffalo on Saturday at 2 pm ET.
