Women’s Basketball Holds off Kent State for a MAC Road Victory on ESPNU
March 06, 2024 | Women's Basketball
KENT, Ohio - It's never easy playing on the road let alone competing on a national stage, yet the Cardinals (26-9, 15-2 MAC) were able to hold off the Golden Flashes (18-9, 12-4 MAC) from their fourth quarter comeback to win tonight's ball game on ESPNU.
With the victory, Ball State earned its 26th win for the second-straight season etching its name into the record books once again as the Cardinals tied the program record for most wins in a season. Also, the 15 Mid-American Conference victories is the most in program history.
From start to finish, tonight's contest in the M.A.C. Center was intense as both squads got to display their talents on a national stage. Ball State is the lone school in the Mid-American Conference to have been chosen to play on ESPNU two years in a row.
The opening frame had eight ties and three lead changes which saw the Cardinals end the first quarter with a two-point (18-16) edge over the Golden Flashes.
The second period mimicked the first as Ball State outpaced Kent State 17-15 for a 35-31 halftime edge over the Golden Flashes.
After the break, the Cardinals were on fire as Ally Becki hit back-to-back 3's with a little over a minute shaved off the clock to put Ball State up by 12 (31-43). The Cardinals continued to dominate the floor offensively and defensively eventually building a 14-point cushion (49-35) with 4:34 on the clock after Estel Puiggros hit one from behind the arc. Per usual though, it came to no surprise that Kent State would not go away quietly. The Golden Flashes began to make a comeback around the four-minute mark and would outscore BSU 12-7 to cut the Cardinals' once 14-point lead to nine (47-56) at the end of the third quarter.
The final 10 minutes were an up and down affair which saw Kent State nipping at the heels of Ball State the entirety of the final stanza. As a matter of fact, the Golden Flashes made it a two-point ball game (73-71) with 11 seconds on the clock. However, Ball State used some strategic passing on its last possession until Kent State finally sent Madelyn Bischoff to the line for two free throws. Bischoff made both to seal the win for the Cardinals.
For the game, Alex Richard had yet another impressive showing inside the paint as she led the Cardinals in scoring with 17 points. Behind Richard was Nyla Hampton who chipped in 16 while Becki finished the contest with 13.
Defensively, Marie Kiefer ended the night with 11 rebounds.
The Ball State women 's basketball team will now wrap up regular season action at Buffalo on Saturday at 2 pm ET in University Arena.
