Hartlaub Handcuffs Dolphins; Cardinals Score Big in Third & Fifth Innings
March 02, 2024 | Baseball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacob Hartlaub scattered just four hits over 4.2 innings Saturday in game one of a doubleheader, and Ball State capitalized on Jacksonville's quiet bats for a 9-2 road victory at John Sessions Stadium.
Hartlaub didn't reach a decision and only struck out a pair of batters while allowing three walks, but he shut out the Dolphins through four-and-a-half innings while the Cardinals built an 8-0 advantage. Jacksonville struck for its first run on a triple by Justin Nadeau with two outs in the fifth, and after Hartlaub walked Tyrell Brewer, he was replaced by Owen Quinn.
Ball State, meanwhile, put runners on base in every inning but the second, sixth and ninth, and used a four-run third to take command. Centerfielder Nick Gregory homered to lead off the top of the third for a 2-0 Ball State lead, then after Decker Scheffler singled, Michael Hallquist homered for a 4-0 lead. Scheffler, batting in the leadoff spot, also scored the game's first run when he was hit by pitch to open the game, then stole second and scored on a fielder's choice.
The Cardinals scored three more in the fifth inning, keyed by Gregory's two-run double. Jacksonville scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Ball State made it 9-2, with Blake Bevis scoring from third on a sacrifice fly from Houston King.
Gregory and shortstop Dylan Grego each had three hits for the Cardinals. Gregory's homer was his second of the season. Ball State batters rapped 13 hits compared to just seven for the Dolphins.
Quinn was credited with the win while allowing one run over two innings pitched. Nate Blain allowed just one hit with three strikeouts over the game's final 2.1 innings.
Ball State (6-3) and Jacksonville play game two later this afternoon, followed by Sunday's finale. The Jacksonville series opens a five-game Florida road trip for Ball State over spring break. The Cardinals visit Florida A&M for another pair of games (March 5-6) before returning to Muncie to open Mid-American Conference play on March 8 vs. Eastern Michigan.
